Tucked away in a sheltered bay Kilkee has been a popular holiday resort going back to Victorian times, and has hosted well known aristocratic and literary figures in its day. Lord Alfred Tennyson and Sir Aubrey de Vere holidayed here, whilst novelist Charlotte Bronte honeymooned in this hidden gem in 1854. More modern day visitors include Che Guevara, Richard Harris and Russell Crowe.
Kilkee, with its golden, 1 kilometre long Blue Flag beach is regarded as one of the safest bathing places in Ireland, protected from the full force of the Atlantic by a reef known as the ‘Duggerna Rock’. The Diamond Rocks and Pollock Holes, which form natural swimming pools when the tides recede, are well worth a visit. Try some scuba diving at Kilkee Bay, which was rated by the late Jacques Cousteau as the best diving location in Europe and among the top five in the world!
Enjoy dramatic cliff walks, tennis, golf, diving, water sports and children’s amusements and for some indoor fun take advantage of the top class facilities at Kilkee Waterworld. For something really special take a dolphin watching boat trip from nearby Carrigaholt and get up close with fascinating Bottlenose Dolphins as they interact with each other in their native habitat.
Kilkee is 1 hr away from Limerick City.
